04 — The people behind it

Frank & Kent Gilchrist.
Houston car people.

Frank grew up a car guy in El Paso, Texas — the kind who got a traffic citation at age 11 for driving his dad's work truck. His first new car: a 1966 Lemonwood Yellow SS396 Chevelle. Next came a 1967 Camaro, turned into a drag car on the day of delivery with his friend Bobby Haley. They named it "Charlie Camaro" after a local El Paso dealer mascot and raced it across the Southwest United States.

After a career in marketing and 18 years running Texas Stagecoach — a custom truck conversion company that sponsored NHRA Top Fuel racer Del Worsham for 15 years — Frank semi-retired to his 19-acre Houston property. He bought a few cars, ran out of space, and sourced a decommissioned Air Force building from Kelly AFB in San Antonio. He deconstructed it, hauled it 200 miles, and rebuilt it in Houston over 18 months. The result: a 14,000 sq ft barn full of cars he'd always wanted.

The Charlie Camaro story ends well: Frank tracked down the original VIN from old microfiche, found the car in Fort Worth, and drove it home 35 years later. It's the only car in the barn that isn't for sale. In 2013, son Kent joined and they made it official: Frank's Car Barn.
